Overview:
The highest coastal range in the eastern United States--OK,
so they're not the Himalayas. Still, the view from Great
Blue Hill at 635 feet and a sedate half-hour's hike, is
breathtaking. You can practically count the windows on the
Hancock Tower and, on a clear day, spy Mount Monadnock, 70
miles away.
Appeal:
Blue Hills
Reservation offers 6,500 acres of woods, meadows and ponds
with over 200 miles of trails for hiking, riding and nature
study. About one-third of the reservation is open to
mountain bikers. You can climb and descend for hours. Got
legs of steel and the agility of a billy goat? Tackle the
rocky ascent to Buck Hill, just above Houghton Pond. A
milder climb up the paved Summit Road crests Great Blue
Hill. More experienced mountain bikers might want to test
their mettle descending Coon Hollow Path. |
