The
Atmosphere:
Matrix is a fabulous room that looks like it was designed
for a never-released 1963 Elvis Presley-goes-to-outer-space
movie. The main bar boasts a counter that literally sparkles
with hundreds of tiny lights. Diner-style stools line the
bar and built-in sofas circle the room. The walls are
covered with retro-hip multi-colored rectangles. The Donna
Reed-meets-DKNY design is the handy work of Boston club
designer Kevin Durant, who is also responsible for the
gorgeous interiors of Embassy and Vertigo.
The Draw:
The crowd doesn't
quite match the stylish interior. On Saturday nights,
suburbanites leaving "Tony and Maria's Comedy
Wedding" file into Matrix's neighbor, NYC Jukebox to
dance to cheese-ball disco hits. This same crowd slowly
makes its way over to Matrix when Jukebox's tiny dance floor
fills up. It's not a Lansdowne crowd here, but the lack of
attitude is a nice change of pace. |
